Work/Study Program

The Work/Study program provides on-campus part-time job opportunities for eligible full-time York University undergraduate students. These jobs are primarily available during the September to April academic session, although a limited number of jobs are also available in the summer to students who will be continuing their studies in the following Fall/Winter session or are enrolled in summer courses.

Eligibility

You may be eligible for the Work/Study program if you meet all of the following criteria:

  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person.
  • An undergraduate student enrolled in a degree program.
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Demonstrate satisfactory academic progress (i.e. you are not on academic warning/probation).
  • Have not defaulted on previous student loans or other government bursary programs.
  • Fall/Winter (September to April): Full-time in both the Fall and Winter terms – i.e. at least 60% of a full course load (nine credits) in each term or at least 40% (six credits) in each term for students with a permanent disability.
  • Summer (May to August): Full-time in at least 60% of a full course load (40% of a full course load for students with a permanent disability) or registered as a Full-time student in the Winter term and returning to Full-time studies in September.

We encourage students to apply for government financial aid (e.g. OSAP or other assistance program in their home province).

Salary Rate

Hourly rates can vary with the nature of the job, the scope of responsibilities and your work experience. The rate of pay will be indicated on the job posting and/or you will be advised by the employer during the interview.

Benefits and Responsibilities

The Work/Study program helps you meet your expenses during the academic year, and offers you valuable life and work experience with flexible hours that work around your academics. As a Work/Study student, you are a valued University employee and have important responsibilities. All students are expected to:

  • Complete your assigned duties.
  • Keep your supervisor informed of your availability to work the agreed upon hours.
  • If you are unable to honour your commitment, speak to your supervisor immediately and try to arrange a more workable schedule.
  • If you withdraw or drop to Part-time status during the academic session, inform your employer immediately; you will no longer be eligible for Work/Study and will have to resign from your position.

How to Apply

Jobs will be available for viewing and are posted on the Career Centre Website. Once registered, select Job Postings, then select what campus employment program you are interested in. For example, if you want to find Work/Study positions, follow these easy steps:

  • Click the “Job Postings” button at the top.
  • Choose “RAY, Work/Study, CLAY, or YES” in the “Position Type” drop-down menu.
  • Click “Search”.
  • Instructions for applying for RAY, Work/Study, CLAY or YES positions are found in the top right corner of the job description, in the box labeled “Application Status” or “How to Apply”.
  • For information about a specific posting, please contact the person shown on the relevant posting.

How do I know if I am eligible for the program(s)?

  • Undergraduate students must begin by completing the online Student Financial Profile (SFP) which will determine your eligibility. The SFP for the Fall/Winter session is expected to be available in mid-August.
  • The employer will advise you of your eligibility during the interview process.

Who decides whether I will be hired?
